Congress is working on a "bonus" for soldiers who were forced to stay in Iraq and Afghanistan past their enlistment (troops affected by the STOP LOSS policy).

If passed, they would get an extra $500 A MONTH in retroactive "special pay"  because many of these troops were unable to start jobs or attend college when their enlistments extended.  An estimated 12,000 troops currently in that situation would qualify.

This pisses me off.  First of all, our troops are GROSSLY UNDERPAID.  And now, you're only going to give them a measly $500 bucks for continuing to risk their lives overseas?!?  What's that?  Like, a little over a hundred bucks a week???

Troops affected by stop-loss have already fulfilled their obligation-- a few hundred bucks doesn't make up for the new job they COULD BE WORKING, the fun memories  they COULD BE MAKING with their families, and the safety they COULD BE HAVING here in the states.

I'm glad Congress is at least considering giving them SOMETHING, but our troops deserve waaaaay better than that.

Isis, I have never been in service because of a hearing problem that happened in my younger years. However, I agree with you for as much as I detest any violence including the wars past and present. If their are going to do anything give them a full time pension plan for the soldier and their families and when the soldier has deceased keep it going. Spouses only get a small portion of SSI if they have worked before going in. If they are just young soldiers, female/male those benefits should go their immediatley families. Sounds like a Walt Disney fantasy I know, but it would sure help the widows and any children that is left behind.

Isis,

You're right, at least they are getting something for being back door drafted. And notice that they are only getting this now that Democrats (you know, the people who didn't support the troops because they disagreed with using the troops in Iraq in the first place) are in Congress (see college tuition, too). It amazes me that Republicans are still able to trick the troops into voting for them when they only 'support them' when they are holding a gun in their hand.

{IF or WHEN} Congress is working on anything, it's a miracle!

The most important financial obligation Congress is quickly
obligated to react to is their obligation to enhance their own
salary-increases and medical coverage and perks.

Currently it's a Dummy-Crat Congress!

It is very apparent and visible that these political-slackers
regard the military as substandard-class subordinates in
the realm of human value.

All is well in the house as long as this collection of gossipers
and spinners can sit on their puffy tender buns and administrate
gain for themselves.

For: "When in Congress, do as the Cons do!"

The number one priority of our country should be taking care of our soldiers, veterans who served honorably defending everyone's rights. They work 24/7 under the most rigorous trying conditions. A huge bonus should be paid to them period. Thankyou Isis for bringing this to the publics attention.

Unfortunately, many US citizens won't really care about the war or our soldiers unless it affects everyone - meaning a draft, as you brought up. That's when we'll see protests like we did in the 60s with Vietnam.

Great blog Isis!

I agree evil_monkey. The draft needs to be reinstated to get people off of their lazy
BLEEP to do something to stop this.

RD and Evil, the only one's in recent history to talk about and try to bring back a draft was Charlie Rangle and his cohorts. As a Disabled Viet Nam Vet I know first hand the sacrifices the men and women of the military make. They are overworked and underpaid PERIOD. Always have been and always will be. I hope you don't get your wish because then they will be defending us on OUR soil and not keeping them busy in their own countries. And if it does come to that I don't even want to see either of you of any anti military types crying for the military to protect you. Get a spine and do it yourselves.

NoFear: That line is straight out of the Bush Cheney fear mongering book. It worked on the feeble minded and it seems to still work to some degree. The military would have many many volunteers if anything was to happen on our soil. And believe me I can protect myself and my country with no problem if need be. There would be no need for a draft if "they" come here to fight us on our soil. "They" are here and "they" are waiting to see who the next President will be. If it's McSame then "they" will attack again. If it gets too close to call before the election I'm sure Bush and his cohorts will do something to make it look like "they" attacked us so "they" the Republicans will get in.

RD I never said anything about a draft with the exception of Charlie Rangle, and he is one of yours in case you didn't know. I am exstatic that you can protect yourself. At least guns are in your favor as most libs are anti gun. Bush isn't going to do any such thing, that is just paranoia on your part. They won't attack if Mac is in because they know he will react like Reagon did. Have a nice day and ease up on the koolaid.

Check out the HBO series "Generation Kill". It's a good story about this whole Iraq mess.

War is rarely a good thing. So senseless seeing lives wasted and families on both sides torn apart due to a devestatiing loss.

I was always curious as to why neither of the Bush twins ever served. Hmmmmmm. Maybe he didn't want his daughters in harms way.

It pisses me off to Isis.

Amt_Thght:

Come on now... you cannot really point the blame at the "Dummy-Crat" Congress because when it was a Republican Congress nothing was done either. I get tired of hearing those kinds of statements.
