My company fell victim to TWO computer viruses this morning. One came through e-mail and looked like it came from UPS as a package notice, and is easy enough to avoid since no one around me ships anything via UPS.

The second, however, utilizes Instant Messenger (which we use extensively) and appears to come from a collegue. If you click on the message, it hijacks your contact list and sends itself to all your contacts and looks like you sent it.

These two collectively cost my company more than 2 hours of lost productivity for more than a dozen people while we scanned and removed these viruses. There's probably some punk kid sitting around giggling at what he did via IM. Well I'm not giggling. I'm fuming mad.

What kind of idiot sits around thinking of malicious ways to disrupt people's work? I know it's difficult to track down the originator of these viruses, but if it ever happens, they should face mandatory jail time.

I have been a virus victim before too. I think these viruses are created by someone that is a complete loser that needs to feel like they accomplished something. Because they have never accomplished anything in their life. They think they are now someone. Kinda like the losers that spray graffiti. They see their name painted on a wall and they think they are now someone.
I also once got a virus from some place that caused my home page to always be a website of a company that sells antivirus. From their website I sent e-mails that I wasn't stupid enough to give money or trust my credit card number with a company that would send out viruses. But I bet many people ordered their antivirus.
It is important to keep you antivirus up to date. If anyone doesn't have any and can't afford to buy some, google AVG free software. Also I once got a virus that my paid for antivirus wouldn't fix. Spybot search and destroy fixed it. Spybot is also free. My computer automatically runs the antivirus every day. Then I run the Spybot about once a week too.

If they would put these idiots in jail for a while, NO access to a computer, things would have advanced so far by the time they got out that they wouldn't know where to start. Or have as part of their probation that they weren't allowed to even touch a computer. Although I know that would be hard to enforce. Our last computer got a virus that completely wiped it clean. I lost EVERYthing.

I can't blame you for being mad, I'd be ticked myself. I get sick and tired of people that think it's okay to do damage or harm to other people and their property. And yeah, it would be great to see the authors of all these viruses put in jail. I use Avast, which is free on your personal computer and fairly cheap for company computers. It scans my email before I even open it.

I checked McAfee virus threat page, which shows the origins of either country or state, guess what? the bulk of them originate in the southwest!!! if you don't believe me see for yourself at McAfee home page and just find where you click to see virus threats and origins!

Anyone who creates and uses viruses that interrupt, damage or corrupt other people's use of the internet should not only be jailed, they should be barred from ever using a computer again. They are insignificant twerps that have absolutely zero compassion for fellow human beings (or any other species that uses computers). They think they are funny when something they created screws people up and they are as bad as the ones that hack into someones personal data for their own use. First offense, long jail time, second offense, remove their ability to use a computer (remove hands) third offense, life imprisonment without parole. This should also apply to hackers.

I'm with you MesaBiker! My computer was hit with a virus a few years ago, and it cost me time and money to fix... I don't understand how or why some people do those things..

I don't know of anyone who hasn't been hit by a virus at least once. I'm in agreement with everyone. Jail time! No leniency for the fools.

It's really a shame their are such low-life sick punks, who do such secretly & cowardly nasty acts of mayhem and disruption.
They (no matter the age or gender) should be jailed .....no doubt about it. AND make restitution when an where ever possible!

Everyone is calling these people twerps, losers, idiots, fools and all kinds names. My question is, if any of these names were to fit these individuals why are they the ones creating and sending the viruses out and you are the ones getting them on your systems? Get better protection and the problems will never happen to your systems. Don't open things that you don't know where they came from. Simple everyday tasks will make it almost impossible for a hacker to hurt your systems. Should they be jailed or given high paying jobs at computer companies to get rid of their boredom?

RD, they're getting better and better at it. My company develops high-end, enterprise software products, so we're no stranger to virus protection and avoidance.

We "caught" the Instant Messenger virus because two co-workers were IM'ing each other and a message popped up from one of them right in the middle of their conversation that simply said "Check this out" with a link to what looked like a picture. But neither of them actually 'sent' the message. No telling how it got there in the first place we get virus scan definition updates every morning.

It immediately launched a Trojan and spread itself to others at work on his contact list. Thankfully it wasn't particularly destructive, more of an inconvenience, but it still stole productivity from my team.

They should definitely get jail time. Sure, companies should have better security, but those who enter the store, get around the security and steal or damage the store should be prosecuted.

Having said that, EVERY PERSON AT YOUR COMPANY should be given weekly reminders not to open random pop ups or emails, period.

MB: I've been in IM sessions and never once have I opened anything without asking the person I'm conversing with if they just sent me something. It's an old trick.

Well, I guess I'm a "new dog" to this old trick. :-)

Lesson well learned, that's for sure!

I think the very people that sell you software to fix viruses are the same people making the virus. Some kind of sick twisted sales tactic.

They destroy your computer, then offer to fix it for $29.99 or more.

Forget jail time... Hang em High!

Just brain-storming here - Why isn't it possible to create an anti-virus program that automatically returns all such progams to the sender. Already open and running...

They already detect the virus and quarantine it: why couldn't it be returned already opened? Can't imagine more poetic justice and karma all wrapped up in one tasty program. Of course, I never even used the internet till a few years ago - so I don't know WHAT is possible.

Maybe someone should run with that idea... The Gate's open (Bill), lol.
