Finally a little "pork" spending I can get behind.

John McCain says the US government should offer a 300 million dollar prize to the first company that comes up with cheaper and signifigantly more efficient battery technology that could power our cars and trucks.

I love it.

It comes out to a dollar for every person in the US.

Can you think of a better way to spend a buck?

But why stop there?

How about a prize to the first company that comes up with more affordable and efficient solar panels?

Arizona could be the Saudi Arabia of solar power.

Granted, it comes just a week after he called for offshore oil drilling, but I think John McCain is onto something.

More good ideas like this could put him in the White House.

Thoughts?

Troy, can you tell us why John McCain voted against the renewable energy bill in Congress? This bill would have given important incentives for renewable energy but he chose to vote it down!!!

I don't think that we have seen the real John McCain yet. Actions speak louder than words.

McCain is the epitome of flip flop. He's so full of BS he's starting to even believe himself.

When it comes to "Crusty" McCain the question is who's pulling the strings and supplying the voice when the dummy's mouth moves?
As for the "contest" for the $300 mill, I'm sure the judging would be as honest as anything McCain has been engaged in.

I like elitist Obama's answer better. He says no drilling, we're just going to tax the oil companies. Typical Obama, just tell the people what they want to hear, and people hate the oil companies right now. Does anyone seriously think the oil companies won't respond to a new tax with raising the prices at the pump even more?

AZMee has the nerve to accuse someone else of telling McCain what to say when Obama's campaign steals other people's speeches for him?

Tazaz: What else was on that bill and who else voted against it?

Problem is the guy that makes the good invention and gets the $300 million will patent the invention. The oil companies will buy the patent off of the guy for 1/2 billion, and we will be just like we are now, except $300 million dollars wiser.

The whole plan is kind of vague (most likely intentionally so).

Still its a good start.

I think it is time for big ideas when it comes to getting the oil monkey off of our backs.

THis is just another political ploy by McCain, one who is running for the conservative party who apparently loves spending govt. money.

The $300 million prize is a sham. Our govt. cannot afford to give anyone this much money for an invention. And, it's not necessary. Any good business person will tell you not to give away money that you don't have to. THere are many companies out there that understand they will make much more than $300 million if they make efficient batteries. And, people like me want the opportunity to invest in these products.

Also, I'd like to know why McCain says that he is in favor of offshore drilling one day and then says this two days later. Why does he think it is necessary to invest billions into offshore drilling when he understands that this is not a viable option and those companies should be investing in alternative energies? Political lip service, that's why.

And, in case you are wondering, the leader in the solar industry is in Phoenix. First Solar traded at $12 when we first discovered it, now it is trading around $300. If only we had invested in them. Now, we are placing our bets on other Solar companies.

It's a good idea, but should hardly be thrown into the category of "pork." That stuff is usually frivolous, you know, like building bridges to nowhere etc. What a great incentive....

John McCain is only doing the bidding of his OIL Rich Lobbyist Comrads, Trent Lott. The first phone call saying "I Did it" would be a scene out of 24. You would have snipers on the roof, agents in all corners of your house.
You would be considered an Enemy Combatant or a Terrorist because you can change the Economy and hinder our 100 year war in Iraq.

300,000,000 is nothing to Exxon who just had a 2.5 billion dollar award turned over for $500,000,000.

That's bounty money to keep it in the ground, just like the Oil all the time raising gas prices as though their is a "shortage" with no lines here or there. Just a fake shortage!

John McCain is funny! How about a beer tax! We need revenues now, not later.

John McCain is the ultimate politician.
How do you know when a politician is lying?
His lips are moving.
What we are in for from now until November
will be the biggest show called "Who Tells the biggest lies?"
McCain is still the lesser of two evils.

Remember the graphic interface for the PC was thought to be of no value by a large computer company and was given to two kids in their garage. Look that happen. Most great thing have came this way. This is a much better way than giving out large amounts of money and get nothing for it.. Look at cancer.

Troy,

At least it's a positive idea. Yes it needs some clarification. But it's still a positive talking point.

It's easy to say let's tax the corporations but the corporations will only raise prices to pass the tax increase onto all of us. Net gain? Zero! Net loss? It's out of our pockets again. And just what will happen to that increased revenue anyway? Net result? It will sink the economy.

No idea on the energy issue is an immediate fix. All will take various amounts of time and money to accomplish. But we must start someplace. I say lets start on all the ways to make our country independent of outside meddling.

Those that wish to take potshots at constructive ideas are nothing but hate mongers. All lip, no actionable ideas.

Hydrogen power is comming into play rapidly and will be ahead of solar and battery operations in cost, efficiency and quick availability. Major car mfgs are already testing 100's of vehicles right now with hydrogen power.

The American People need to wake up, do you honestly think, dangling a carrot in the eyes of america on the brink of total domination by Big Oil, Big Energey, Big Telecommunication, Big Dairy, on and on that it will be too late.

Here it Monday, and the Government puts a two year moritoruium on solar in our deserts for "alternative energy" clean energy.

So where is the 300 million dollar man's outcry for that. the GOP is not spelled GOD, but why is it that every 3am one of them wake up with some new "no bid" monetary way to screw america yet again.

John McCain will make, spend, and invest more than 300 million dollars before someone is allowed to reduce the consumption of oil! He is lobbyied by Big Oil, Big Cancer, even if he has it!

Troy,

Like you said this is a good start. It’s not the final ultimate solution, but just a start.

If we tax gas companies to get this money, like Obama wants to, we will just see them increase the cost of gas. More than likely they will increase the cost by more than the tax amount. That doesn't do us any good because the people will pay the costs in higher gas prices. And the gas companies will likely get out of paying most of these taxes with all their "Write-off’s" anyway. That’s all we need to do is give the gas companies a reason to elevate the price even more.

I think it will take many sources of renewable energy to replace fossil fuels. If we replace fossil fuels with only 1 new source we will end up in the same place at a later time. In other words, we will end up with only one new source of fuel in place of fossil fuels and if anything happens to that supply then the price of the new fuel will escalate out of control just like gas has.

We should only start new drilling in America as a short term fix to help lower prices of gas now. Then, we as a country should start a search for multiple sources of renewable energy. It will take some time and plenty of money, but the American people can do this. Also, the government should stay out of it all together. They shouldn’t support current fuels over any new fuels, nor should they suppress any new fuels over current versions. Let the free market determine what comes next and the costs of each new renewable energy source. Only then can we truly be independent of the Middle East for oil and free fr

Troy:

Pork is pork and it doesn't matter who is promoting it. We don't need to be wasting time, effort and money on a boondoggle that as someone said will end up being bought up by the oil companies. As someone else said, hydrogen is the ultimate answer and it is being addressed as we speak. One major hurdle remains and that is the ability to have an adequate supply on-board. However, at stationary locations like power plants etc. there is planty of room for hydrogen storage and I haven't heard of any talk about converting power plants to hydrogen. Maybe the $300 million would be better spent in developing that area.
