I've been lucky enough over the years to have only caused one car crash.

It happened two weeks after I got my license, and I was driving my mom's brand new Camaro.

Nobody was hurt, it was only a fender bender.

But I thought about that crash today when the teen driver safety act went into effect.

The new law keeps brand new drivers from driving during late night hours, and limits the number of underage passengers they can have in the car. (My mom's Camaro was packed with fellow players on my high school basketball team. I hit a fence trying to whip a U-turn in front of some other friends.)

After six months, the restrictions expire.

I think its a good law.

Your thoughts?

I am curious as to how law enforcement will make the new restrictions stick.

The only teens that will be affected by this will be the teens that are hispanic and driving wherever Sheriff Joe has his posse set up for illegal sweeps.

I think it is a good law. The 16 year olds today seem a lot less mature than they did 35 years ago when I was their age.

I think it's a good law too. I remember quite a few of my classmates getting into accidents or receiving tickets shortly after they received their license. I remember being packed into friends cars, the music was blasting, we were goofing off. It was a lot of fun but also very dangerous.

I had a teen and his buddy riding on my bumper not too long ago. I was in a 25 mph zone with a school zone approaching. He had a buddy in the car with him. Was he trying to be cool? Probably. Would his buddy thought him cool if he rear ended me as I slowed for the school zone? Probably not.
All you new drivers need to realize your safety comes first. You can be cool with your friends after you're out of the car. Or even better start making it a cool thing to be a safe, cautious driver.

Its bad for teen carf pooling to school as they can only have 1 teen passenger, and it crunches the efforts to get the voting age changed to when a person gets their DL, as in political science, its further restrictions hinder those efforts. If you can charge them as adults, they need to have more rights in return.

The law states that a teen can be out past midnight for work or religious reasons. My questions are as follows. What religion other then Satanism is practiced between midnight and 5am? So are they saying that any teen that tells them they are a Satanist it is ok to be out? I can see it now, the cop says why are you out this late and the teen responds we are Satanists and we are on our way to a ritual.

This should of been on the ballot, and the people of Arizona should have been able to vote for such a law! If you are 18 you are still Mama and Daddy little little girl or boy!
But you can join the military or go to college, and wait and wait, and wait, and wait, until one day you get to actually vote for some of these 3am Johnny isn't home yet legislative quagmires. 18.5 who is know, without "profiling" latenight drivers who look to be 18 years of age with someone who appears to be 18.5 or younger in the passenger seat!

So mom gets pulled over, and after getting a ticket for her failure to produce her insurance card. The officer who didn't "profile" her and pulled her over for whatever reasons he can think of, moves on and mom was better off not even picking up her child!

Here come the lawsuits. I was profiled, I'm actually 19.5 I have the "PAPERS" to prove it!

and yes, I am a Naturalized Citizen of the United States!

Ooooowheee I can't wait to spend more taxpayer money on that Sherrif Joe lawsuit that is awaiting to happen.

Stupid motorist law! Just don't give out a drivers license until you are 21, and raise the Military Service to 18.5 and not a day sooner or later!

I think its a good law as well and i am also not sure how it will be enforced, but i think it makes teen be more aware of their surroundings which in turn, helps them to be better and safer drivers. i remember my high school years and we used to pile people on top of people inside a little 4 door car and i am sure that was totally unsafe, but there was nothing to prevent us from doing that.

I think the worse distraction that there is are cell phones - at any age. All we do is pass law after law after law. I am so sick of laws. You can't pass a law that gives people common sense unfortunately. You just live and you learn.

Good point ont the cell phones.

I was in San Diego last weekend, and they had signs all over the side of the road saying "hands free only on July 1st."

I think their state law banning hand held cell phones for drivers just went into effect.

I think it'a a great law! 1 - Keeps teens safe from the 21+ drunk drivers who are coming home during that time & 2 - keeps them out of trouble because they should be home anyway and not running the streets all night because their parents have no control over them!!

Too bad the DMV doesn't have a "walk & chew gum" test they can give people!! There are so many bad drivers out there!!!! Although, I have noticed a lot of people driving the speed limit since the gas $ increase?!?!

It really just seems to me that we let them pass more and more laws designed to encroach upon private space we pay for out of our pockets like our cars and homes. If they want full reign over my stuff then they need to buy my dang car.

RDJVZ,

How about midnight mass on Christmas Eve?

Rygg,

I get your point. But having a driver's license is a privalege not a right.

I think the state telling a 16 year old they can only drive at certain times and with certain people for 6 months is reasonable.

and msinfo, I bet they get a pass for midnight mass on x-mas eve.

My students aren't that worried about it since it only lasts for the first 6 months. They kind of understand the need. However, I don't think this will really accomplish anything. After the 6 months is over, what is going to happen. They are going to pile everyone in thier cars, etc. It's just a ploy if you ask me and it isn't fair since these kids pay taxes yet don't get a vote. Perhaps this is why education is underfunded, those using it can't vote. It's a bad system.

This law is nothing but a touchy feel good law. It will do nothing to prevent the kind of deaths of students that inspired this law.
Laws like this are passed mainly on emotion. The parent that pushed this law felt a desire to correct a problem that does not exist. Their child made a bad decision. No law is going to stop children from doing this.

I think the law is great, alot of crazy drivers out there. My daughter just turned 18 and stll doesnt have her license, she never wanted it because she was too scared. She said she will take the nest next month when she heads off to college and gets a part time job.

California's cell phone law just went into effect July 1. If you're under 18, you cannot use any type of communication device AT ALL while driving. The laws are great, but let's just add them to the very long list of laws that aren't currently being enforced. Teens need to realize this is for their own good, but won't. If I stayed out past curfew when I was a teen, my car keys were pulled 'til I got it. Where are parents these days ??
