So Janet Napolitano says she's looking into a four day work week for state workers to save on fuel.

Casa Grande schools could go to 4 days.

Some counties already have.

Count me in. Who wouldn't want a 4 day week? (or more to the point, a three day weekend)

Here's my question:

Could you do your job as well working four 10 hour shifts?

Be honest. And if so, are you pushing your boss to go 4 days?

We worked a 4 day week for years and the office was open 5 days a week. Half the crew worked Mon-Thurs and the other half worked Tues-Fri. Worked real well until the new commander came in and ended it because she didn't like 4 10's. I also worked for SRP where our department was open 24/7 but we only worked 3 days a week. There was a day shift and a night shift both 12 hours. One half the crew worked Mon-Wed and the other worked Thurs-Sat. Each crew then worked one Sunday a month. We rotated days to coinside with College schedules. Worked fantastic for everyone. Would do it again in a heartbeat.

I worked 4 ten hour days twenty five years ago when I was working as a welder. The boss had us do that wanting us to work overtime on Fridays. But few were willing to come in on Fridy to work overtime, so he converted it back to five eights after about a month. It was nice while it lasted.
My brother works as a maintanance guy at a grammer school. They work 4 tens in the summer when school is not in session. He loves the three day weekends.
I wish they would do it where I work. But I don't think it will happen.

I work four 10 hour shifts. It saves one round-trip to work per week. Less smog produced, less traffic and less gas used.

It is also more productive at work. You have more time to get work done in a 10 hour day. Look at the set-up time and clean-up time each day. When you work four 10 hour days you only have to do set-up and tear-down four times instead of five times.

My husband and I are both very weary of this. With things taking as long as they do now with most government offices we believe this will just add more back-up to any paperwork process you may have to use. Also we cannot afford the additional daycare if our children are off for another day during the week as it is in Peoria School District the Teachers get one day additional a month off which the school calls "Teacher In Service Day" but according to the principal at Foothills Elementary School he cant force the teachers to show up on those days but yes they do get paid for it. Maybe those days the schools should offer free child care for parents that have jobs that will not budge on the issue of having to be there all 5 days a week we get paid for.

I think its a bad idea for the schools to go to a 4 day work week. That'll end up hurting our communities all over the state. It will hit the pocket books, more kids may be left unattended during the day. It will help the workers/teachers but at the the kids and parents expense. Just not a good idea.

I do like the idea of a 4 day work week. I think many business and employees accross the state could benifit from it.

I would love to go to a 4 day week.

It's not the governments job to provide free day care for kids. Not 5 days a week, or through the summer. So the cost to parants should have nothing to do in the decision for a 4 day school week.
I think the longer hours in school for the younger kids would cause the kids to "tune out" what they are learning toward the end of the day. Plus the three day weekends would allow them to lose a lot of what they just learned.
In fact, I think they should have school almost all year long. Give them two weeks off around Christmas. Then about three weeks off in the summer. The rest of the time they are in school. They would be a lot smarter.

Ken,

I agree summer vaca is too long.

Hockey,

I think the 4 day school week is a mistake also. What's the saying? "Idle time is the devil's workshop?" Too many latch-key kids running around while their parents work fridays.

Good discussion here.

I'm sad to say I will have to pass. I have to work. But I look forward to watching you make fools out of yourselves on the news. Are you going to be the one wearing the tinfoil hat? Or will all of you be wearing tinfoil hats? Aren't you worried that a black helicopter might drop a bomb on all of you to shut up the real truth that only you people know?
