There was a story on the news tonight about a school bus that had caught the median and the driver over corrected.  The bus flipped injuring the passengers aboard.

I have experienced catching the median and having the sensation of being pulled off the road on a couple occassions.

My questions is this:

If we continue to see accidents and over turned buses, semi's and cars because drivers have over corrected, why do we continue to build roads that have a median that pulls you inward?

Wouldn't it make sense to either make the roads wider or so that the median does not pull you inward, making you want to correct automatically?

Whatever the answer is, we should FIX IT!

Instead, we continue to build the same style road and we continue to see vehicles flipped and people thrown!

I'm totally confused about "Catching the median" ?? What the heck do you mean by that?

Blaming the roads instead of the drivers seems like a cop-out. If you drive correctly & safely, staying in your lane (which removes the median from the picture) you will not be subject to self-caused accidents.

If someone's not paying attention (read: talking or texting on their cell phone) and they're going to wreck, I would rather they be dragged off the road instead of being forced back into traffic where they could run into ME while I'm driving safely!

We don't need wider lanes, we need alert consciencious drivers. When you're behind the wheel and responsible for passengers, you need to be more alert than the average driver. When your behind the wheel and your alone, you're still responsible for drivers and life around you as well as your own.

Don't blame the roads! We're really talking about dangerous people here!

To blame the road for an accident is like blaming the keyboard for your spelling. If you are driving then be alert and responsible. Don't try to multi-task and stay off the cell phone.

Twenty or in fact Thirty years ago most cars
were the size of today's trucks.

I'll agree with paying attention and being
accountable for your actions is the best way to avoid this issue.

As far as the road goes I just wish they would finish what they start (Loop 303) come to mind

I will now be on my way, driving on the narrow mountain roads leading to the cool air of Northern Arizona to go camping. I hope all of you have a safe 4th. Well most of you anyway.

Why "... widen the roads?"

Just make the 'bad drivers' walk! SmileyCentral.com

In all fairness, there are some roads here that are just very poorly made and/or maintained and take more than normal effort to stay straight when driving on. As far as narrow roads, yes the cities do have several and they are a pain when you drive a full size vehicle. I haven't had any close calls except for that time when a school bus driver pulled out in front of me. Seriously, these bus drivers need to take safety classes or something because the majority of them that I've seen I wouldn't trust to transport my pets.

In all actuality, our roads here are already wider than most surface streets back east. The standard is 12 feet wide for each lane and since the widest a vehicle can be legally is 8 feet (excluding mirrors) that should allow 2 feet on each side of the widest vehicles. A passenger car is only about 6 feet wide. If you need more room than that, you shouldn't be driving. There are a few locations where the lanes are narrower than 12 feet usually at intersections where speeds are slower and they try to squeeze in more turn lanes to increase capacity. Unfortunately, the powers of the time past deemed the standard rights-of-way widths for every type of roadway (arterial, collector, local) thereby limiting any widening without ridiculous costs to purchase right-of way. Finally, we could have 30 foot roadway lanes and there would still be idiots hitting the median curb even though the median is properly signed and painted for visibility. The problem is inatentiveness by the so-called driver, not the roadway.

worldlyone, the actual limit on width is 8 1/2 ft. ( 102" ), that is the width of the trailers I pull, unless you weren't including commercial vehicles. Trust me, the roads here in the west are a breeze for them when comparing to the east coast as you say. The medians have to have some downward slope to allow for proper drainage, to not have that would create "ponding" when it rains. All in all, people just don't pay attention, way too many distractions.

Take the city bus. They drive the speed limit and I have yet to see any of them hit the median. Unless some other fool wasn't paying attention and caused the accident.

Maybe you should drive in just a straight line out of town and do not turn. That might be a better solution.

Better question: why don't we install seat belts on buses?

If anything, roadway lanes will be narrowed due to smaller cars and higher volumes. Additional narrower lanes for autos and special 12 ft lanes for trucks and buses without purchasing additional rights-of-way. Similar to California's set-up where trucks are only allowed to use the 2 outer lanes on freeways only their lanes are all the same width. The wider lanes here would also be the outer lanes and trucks and buses would only allowed in them. This may not happen but, I would bet that there will not be any widening of lanes either. aksjfd: That's not a better question, it's just a different question and oneof the biggest reasons for not having seat belts is "who is going to make sure they are used and what happens if they are not." The driver cannot take the time to make sure they are used. There would need to be a special monitor person on-board to police the seat belt use. It takes a lot of money and who pays?

Gee! I do hope Mr Wonderful doesn't get lost in the cool woods up north and not find his way back. Wouldn't that be a pitiful shame???

Make all roads square in design
where all dimensions are equal
in width and length.
Thereby, limiting the turning arc
and distance.
That will certainly decrease fuel
requirements and time utilized.
Furthermore, place roadway seat belts
affixed to the roadway itself to be
secured to each vehicle as a safety
factor that is occupied.
Not only will safety be improved,
but fuel cost and insurance cost will
be greatly reduced;
especially, if the engine remains off.

Geez, what a great idea!
