I heard a story on the radio today that I couldn't believe.  That being the story of Marian Anderson. She was a singer back in the 30's with one amazing voice. They had asked her to put a concert on in Washington DC, and sold the concert out to 25,000 fans. Unfortunately, the powers to be at the time decided to recant on her invite because she was black. She insisted on giving the money back to everyone and then to put on a free show at the Lincoln Memorial in 1939. She stood in front of the Lincoln Memorial n front of 75,000 people and sang My Country Tisavy.  Singing about the freedom of all people in the United States. This type of protest was a amazing display which advanced rights for people of all color back all the way back in 1939!!! That is a protest I respect, not one of insulting others, or yelling and screaming just because your guy lost.  Not blocking entrances to place and not allowing people in. But rather, one of simplicity. One which showed to the world, that regardless of what is going on in the world at this moment, I still believe in the dream of America. People today should take a lesson in that!!!

I agree with you. I like people that obey the law. And I like the protests to not cause trouble for anyone. I remember not too long ago, thousands pretested in a march in Phx that they didn't have a permit for nearly that many people. They blocked intersections, got into arguments, left trash behind, waved foreign flags, chanted in a foreign launguage, etc. And they did it in other cities besides Phx. What makes it even worse, many were not even legal citizens. How dare they! If they would have had the guts to all go back to their home land and march onto their own capital, they could have done some good. Instead, they were just a pest people didn't like. I wish sheriff Joe would have been out there. He could have rounded up hundreds of them.

Isn't it amazing that this happened just 67 years ago which means things like this happened to some people's grandparents. Isn't even more amazing that we all weren't able to go to the same schools just 30 years ago? THat means someone's mother and father were not able to have the same education as others.

Kinda strange how so many people from the priveledged sex and race don't think about this and understand that affirmative action is still necessary because children are still feeling the after effects of racism and sexism.

And Ken--there are protests in Mexico very often.

Bravo to Marian for standing up proudly 69 years ago despite the circumstances of that time.

aks, 30 years ago, segregation had already been ruled unconstitutional for a decade. Where were these schools you are speaking about?

Tweety--Yale and other prestigious schools. In fact, Hillary did not do her undergrad there because girls weren't permitted to go to that school until after she graduated.

Heck...women still aren't permitted to be airborne rangers for pete's sake.

Yeah too bad the black community doesn't have too many more Marian's. We could be on a rat infested boat on our way from Africa to America to make a better life for ourselves and then getting here and working 20 hours a day.
No one notices that, that people risk their lives to come here to feed their families, and that there were Black people and white people that risked their lives so that we could whine about reparations and the "white man". There was a time when my dad was in danger of being lynched like so many black men of that time period. Now the only lynching I would get would be a drive by shooting, or a robbery or murdered by a black person. And for every murder or injustice done by white person today againgst a Black person( ie James Bryd) They only use this as justification that "racism is still out there". Like this is our major problem and not the problems that we have made for ourselves. The Ku Klux Klan would be proud, we have succeeded in offically retiring them.
