I learned something today. Did you know that Recession is "Mental," and America is a "Nation Of Whiners?" McCain's top economic adviser Phil Gramm has told us Americans to suck it up and stop complaining about the economy. He says:

"You've heard of mental depression; this is a mental recession, he said, noting that growth has held up at about 1 percent despite all the publicity over losing jobs to India, China, illegal immigration, housing and credit problems and record oil prices. We may have a recession, but we haven't had one yet."

You have to remember that Phil Gramm authored the Enron loophole that lead to the largest collapse in U.S. history, with a loss of 21,000 jobs and allowed executives to plunder their 401K, college savings and pension plans. This also allowed California to get hit with record energy prices and rolling blackouts for over a year.

McCain's campaign is trying to distance itself from Chief Economic Advisor Gramm's comments, expectedly enough.

Americans know that our economic problems aren't just in our heads, and we don't need psychological relief, we need real relief. So, the next time you're paying over $4.00 a gallon at the pump, can't meet your mortgage, have difficulty covering 20% increases at the grocery store, get a 10% increase in your electrical bill, can't afford to fly, cancel your vacation etc., it's all in your imagination. Just ignore that eviction notice, it's all in your mind. Maybe some creative visualization will fill your wallet as well. Stop whining already.......

great post jteam, I thought that I might have been dreamin when I checked my bank account this morning and it had a zero balance!!
Mr Gramm needs to GO POUND ROCKS. He has a lot of gall to even speak to the American people reguarding the state of our economy, since he is the BIGGEST CROOK this century has seen. For him to call anybody a whinner because they cant afford things is at most AUDACIOUS. As far as I am concerned that man should have a bulleye on his forehead, then open season with a huge pay out to whom ever tags him.

I agree that he's wrong....to a point....I have to say thought he has a slight point on how SOME are behaving. I keep hearing people say things like, "ugh, I have to stop going to starbucks" or "ugh I cant go to disneyland" or "I have to turn off my blackberry"...I would have to agree that we are in a real recession, but there are some that are winning about the glamourous life that cant lead right now...its not like we are going through what Americans did during the great depression....far from slicing bread and sharing it with a family of 10....there is a certain amount of self pitty going on and there is a huge amount of actuall recession going on......we have had two recessions since Dubya has been in office, 2001/2008. so maybe if we hang tight, cancel our netflix for now and pull ourselves up by our bootstraps like we've done in the past, we may just survive....getting rid of the Illegals would be a good start, but thats a whole other argument!

Less than a year ago, he wouuld have been right. I think the left made the economy look worse than it was for political reasons back then. Then the mortgage/real estate started getting bad and I think we could have gotten over that. Then the gas prices went through the roof, that in turn raised the price of airlines, groceries, and nearly everything else.
Neither candidate has come out with a real cure to the economy. I think the cure needs to include foreign oil independence.

While I am typically for McCain, this guy kind of made me mad. It's easy to say people are whiners in regards to economy etc when you have so much money, price increases do not really impact you. Sorry, but going from $35 a week in gas to over $70 a week just to get back and forth to work significantly impacts MY economy. That's about $150 a month. To me, that is a lot of money, and if Mr. Gramm thinks I am whining about that, he can send me a check to cover the difference.

Old man McCain better pull his head out of his bunghole and wake up. He's living along this happy trail where there's no problem with the economy in the USA?
The high price of fuel is this country's number one problem.
Lower the fuel prices and people will be able to afford to go to work, pay their mortgage, buy grocerys and maybe splurge on themselves alittle (money into the economy), or go on vacation (money into the economy).
McCain better start making some valid points, or he'll wake up and find himself too far behind in the points - just like Billery did.

And what would all of you whiners done during the great depression? There are no gaurantees in life. hardly anybody born in the USA after WWII has any idea of real hardship because most have always had everything they WANTED, which is not necessarily not what they NEEDED.

Home loans for more than the house is worth? More than one could afford if the ARM kicked in? That's just plain stupidity to put yourself in that position and it was criiminal of the lenders to offer such deals.

Even with condition as they are, YOU are better off than 90+% of the world's population. It's time to stop looking through rose-colored glasses and see the real world.

Senator Graham is RIGHT!

PHILL GRAMM was directly linked to ENRON.

His wife sat on the board of directors.

PHILL GRAMM received the majority of his donations from ENRON people.

He also pushed for the deregulations that allowed ENRON to scam billions of dollars.

He should be in jail and his wife too.

"GRAMMSTANDING MCCAIN" reached into the culture of corruption still loose in America and stood before the American People and said he was clueless on the Economy. Don't be fooled, people asked me what I meant by "GRAMMSTANDING" now you know! That's nothing, there are so many "DARK MARKETS" out there dictating our monetary day, it is all so confusing. We are all cagedvoters as our vote didn't count, because these guys didn't even let Congress have a meetings up until this single digit Congress. Thank GOD for the single digits, because those are transparancy digits, it's just taking the likes of minds to realize when there recession and depression is their Mein Kempf reality being jammed down your throats. Immigration is one of them! It was all about the "ECONOMIC OPPORTUNITY" no immigration reform.

I am so glad to hear that this has caused the same outrage as the Obama/Wright connection. In my opinion, it should matter more. McCain doesn't know much about the economy, therefore, he aligned himself with a fat cat otherwise known as an elitist. He says we are in a mental recession while thousands of jobs are being lost every month. Looks like we are also in a job recession, Gram.

Gram is just unable to see the big picture. The recession hasn't hit jobs the jobs that pay really well, yet. See, we are only at the 'lay the lil guy off before we cut our salaries' stage of the recession. My bf and I haven't felt it, yet. We have watched it happen to our friends and are waiting for it to hit us. That's Gram's problem, he is out of touch because his family has been in the upper crust for a while like McCain's and his wife's.

McCain is so out of touch and ignorant to matters of the economy, he may do something to sabatoge us even more like bomb Iran because the depression won't affect his lifestyle. Or, you can vote for Obama. A man who won a scholarship to Harvard in spite of his situation. A man who knows what it's like to be 'the lil people' with a wife who spends $100 per outfit unlike Cindy's designer duds.

I see info warrior/nowmds/kenishandsome is back, and with a new name.
Thanks for posting my picture. You even got my good side.

Hey ablaze - after the lil guys get laid off, then the educated ones get laid off too, and the lazy legal americans are willing to do the jobs that the illegals are doing now, but the legal americans can't work because the illegals are doing those jobs for low pay, THEN will you admit that we should have booted the illegals when we could have?

aksjfd read my blog
Jul 12, 2008 | 1:31 PM

Hey, I am all for booting them out, don't you remember? I just want our country to do it legally and not Sheriff Joe outlaw style. And, I want them to fix the immigration laws that favor those taking jobs we want that are high paying.

dhw1949 read my blog
Jul 12, 2008 | 3:33 PM

How do you boot someone out legally without finding, arresting, and booting them out?
Arpaio's sweeps could also be done by the local police or DPS in their jurisdictions, Joe just gets to do it wherever he chooses, and does it. Driving with a broken taillight or cracked windshield can get you stopped by any law enforcement officer. No license or proff of insurance could get you arrested.

aksjfd read my blog
Jul 12, 2008 | 4:26 PM

The challenge with Joe is that he is doing it illegally and using racial profiling which is a very slippery slope as evident in WWII. I have no problem with him pulling over people with broken taillight, etc., however, one shouldn't do this under the guise of an illegal immigration sweep. That alone infers that he won't be pulling over any 'white' offenders. Also, he is treating those with brown skin differently than those with white. If 'they' don't have their green card in their possession, they are carted off to jail. If I don't have mine, I am given a tix for driving w/o a license that is easily cleared up. And, if I didn't have proof of insurance, I wouldn't go to jail for that either. I shouldn't have to go to jail for this offense if I speak Spanish only. Which, if I am ever pulled over by MCSO, I will do just to make a point. And, I won't hand over my license just to see if they arrest me, too. That's the problem. This is how they are treating people with brown skin and it's wrong.

THe US is the best country in the world for many reasons. Not being judged and thrown into jail because of your skin color is one of them. As a patriot, I don't want someone screwing this up. We are not Mexico, we are not any other country that would treat people like this, we are the USA and we should start behaving like it again.

Let me share where I am coming from. I didn't have the best parents and was abused by my Mexican step-dad as you all know. Also, I was treated differently than everyone either because I was white or a 'bastard step child'. Who knows which. But, either way, it was a prejudice that I didn't deserve. Having been treated this way, I understand that there is no excuse for this at all. I will never condone it no matter if the people doing it are on 'my side'. A wrong is a wrong and nothing you can do changes that.

Not much to say actually. Just a normal kinda guy. I drive a truck delivering groceries for a major food chain here in the valley. Try to keep educated on local and national events especially those concerning corruption and moral ineptitude by our "elected officials." Very much for protecting our freedoms and rights, always open to new ideas and discussions. I don't identify as Democrat or Republican, and don't like to be labeled as liberal or conservative. Just try to stay responsible and informed as possible.
