Have any parents out there heard anything about vinyl shower curtains possibly having dangerous chemicals?

No, I haven't heard that one? I wouldn't mind hearing more about it.

A study found that PVC shower curtains contained high concentrations of phthalates, which have been linked to reproductive effects, and varying concentrations of organotins, which are compounds based on tin and hydrocarbons. One of the curtains tested released measurable quantities of as many as 108 volatile organic compounds into the air, some of which persisted for nearly a month.

Seven of these chemicals -- toluene, ethylbenzene, phenol, methyl isobutyl ketone, xylene, acetophenone and cumene -- have been identified by the Environmental Protection Agency as hazardous air pollutants, said Stephen Lester, the center's science director and a coauthor of the report.

Potential health effects include developmental damage and harm to the liver and the central nervous, respiratory and reproductive systems, according to the report.

Phthalates and organotins, which are not chemically bonded to the shower curtain, are often added to soften or otherwise enhance the curtain. These additives evaporate or cling to household dust more easily than the chemicals in the curtains themselves, Lester said. Volatile organic compounds also evaporate more easily than the less harmful chemicals, he said.

Vinyl chloride, which is a major building block of PVC, is a known human carcinogen that causes liver cancer.

And your point is ???
Who the hell cares, shower curtains have been around for a hundred years. I've yet to hear at a funeral, "Did you hear, he died from a new shower curtain" Something's got to kill you. If it's not Tomatoe's, it's Jalapeno's, if it's not Jalapeno's, it's Cilantro. It's a Mexican Conspiracy. Shower Curtains !!! OMG what is this world coming to.

If anyone is really worried about it, buy a shower door! about $120.00+ easy to install, and Iv'e never heard about anyone getting cancer from glass.

I rather question what was just stated.....

I once knew of a person, many years ago, who was extremely large.
While in the shower, was eyeing the patterns on the shower curtain;
it was all types of food stuffs in patterns on dinner plates.
This person became so obsessed with hunger/gluttony,
he ate the whole shower curtain sheet.
Needless to say, despite the attractiveness of the curtain, he died.
He failed to digest it; as his bowels became overly impacted
with the whole plastic sheet.

He terminated, sadly, because he failed to control his internal needs and give a sheet!

There are other grave dangers associated with shower curtains that this study has over looked.
If you're a moron and don't know that the shower curtain should hang inside the tub, water runs out onto the floor, you step out, slip and fall, cracking your head, and die stark naked in a pool of blood and water.
On the other hand, if hung properly inside the tub, the shower curtain tends to suck in around you while showering.
This could cause suffocation, causing you lose conciousness, fall, crack your skull, and, die naked in a pool of blood and water. However, the mess will be contained in the tub, as opposed to all over the bathroom floor, and will be much easier for your family and friends to clean up.
With all of the dangers associated with bathing, it's no wonder the French invented perfume instead of going anywhere near soap and water.

LOL - Lessons of the day: Never shower hungry. Hang the curtain on the INSIDE of the tub. And if at all possible replace the curtain with a shower door.

My family is much safer this morning!

makes sense!!!!! Have you smelled a new curtain??? i think all these un natural things that we r breathing cause sever medical problems in many people, my kids for example have a list of problems. it may not kill us immediatly but eventually. its like bug spray you can spray it in your house every so often and not notice the effects it has on you but if you were say to spray it every day all day long it would kill you. makes sense huh????

There is an HBO-America Undercover about vinyl products in general. I try my hardest to avoid these products in general. I wash my shower curtains in the washing machine before putting them up. If anyone out there sees this as a small threat then I do suggest you take some time to watch the HBO specail.

Z-BRA: I'm interested in interviewing someone who takes the precautions you are talking about. Will you give me a call at work? 602-262-5109. Thank you.

I only use fabric shower curtins, dont like the way vinyl shower curtins smell plus they mildew easily, where as my fabric curtins get washed every week.

I think your drinking water is more dangerous than your shower curtain. Especially if your house has plastic water piping.

I grew up in South Florida, playing our version of Little League on the clay fields of South Miami. My dad coached. My mom still doesn't forgive me for my foul ball which almost took off her head. My favorite childhood moment: Dad and I screaming in the Orange Bowl when his Alma Mater, the University of Miami Hurricanes, beat the previously invinsible Nebraska Cornhuskers. Football still reigns supreme. When I wasn't swinging a racket or holding a bat, my mom got me writing, initially for my junior high school paper. I'm still writing today and watching (no longer playing) sports. Now I share life with my wonderful wife, a cat who acts like a dog and a dog who likes chasing the cat.
