When I started in Broadcasting way back when, my first job was in Ashtabula, Ohio.   I was assigned the county beat and I got to know the sheriff at the time.   I remember him telling me that he as sheriff was the supreme law enforcement officer of the county, and police chiefs mostly don’t like him interfering in their cities.

Nothing has changed over the years.  Here in 2008, Sheriff Joe Arpaio with his deputies trained by I.C.E. are conducting anti-immigration sweeps in Mesa and the police chief, George Gascon seems to be thwarting Arpaio’s efforts.  I don’t get it.

How do people in Mesa feel about this.  If you live in Mesa let me know.  Do you agree with Gascon or Arpaio?

I live in the east mesa area. Chief Gascone is useless as a "chief of police" his inability to uphold the law is truly amazing. He doesnt even have the backing of his own men. Of the Mesa PD officers I have talked with and worked with dont approve of what he is doing as far as the illigal immigrants are concernde. He needs to enforce the law on this and maybe some of the crime will actually drop. I think Sheriff Joe is doing the right thing and should be comended for it. He at least is enforcing the law. Most people dont like him because he is too vocal about it but if what he is doing works then who cares if he is vocal. Thats my two cents

It's difficult to fathom why city, county and state officials won't work together to combat crime ... no matter what the crime or crimes!

It appears some put their duty responsibilities aside to cater solely to their 'posture in office' rather than doing their sworn duties.

If any Police Chief, Mayor, Governor or any Public Official (who opposes or suppresses the LAWS of this Land and who, by doing so, covers up crimes, leaking of pertinent legal information to any illegal group or by allowing or initiating the crippling of 'our' lawmen from doing their sworn-duties) they should be extricated from their offices.

They are not genuine law-abiding American Citizens/Officials, but are co-conspirators in crime ... guilty of UN-American Activities and Crimes against the City, County and or State!

They are no better than the lawless they have sworn to protect and to serve us against.

"SIC 'EM!" Sheriff!

I think people are quick to give away other peoples rights to protect their own. I don't think people realize how it feels to drive home after working 16 hours and all you can think about is your bed and all of a sudden you're stopped by the police and your citizenship is questioned, your name is ran through their computers checking for warrants . While this is happening you're detained in a hundred and eight degree weather and when all is done and you come up crystal clean you're told " you can go". all of this because people who look like you are breaking the law. What if you're walking to the park with your children and the police stop and arrest you because you left your ID. Home , why don't we just tattoo a barcode on everyone who is legal in this country

There are over 2 million illegals crossing the boreder into Az do you honestly think the stings will make a difference? All you are doing is alienating a community of hardworking people.

I know we need to do something about illegals but we need to do it on every border and target all nationalities.

First I will address Damico: How is Gascon thwarting the Racial Profilers efforts? He was watching over the two opposing groups that Arpaio has made. He was protecting the people of his city. How that thwarts another Arpaio media effort is me. ATM said "If any Police Chief, Mayor, Governor or any Public Official (who opposes or suppresses the LAWS of this Land and who, by doing so, covers up crimes, leaking of pertinent legal information".

There was more, but it's drivel so I didn't quote it. There is no one covering up crimes EXCEPT ARPAIO. The "leaking" of information was given out by the SHERIFF'S Publicist. Now how that becomes not upholding the laws of this land is a joke. There are leaks in every office of government. Joe's own deputies leak info all the time. That would be because they don't want him as their boss. The show of force by the Mesa Chief was a great idea. He had his officers their to protect the two opposing groups from each other. Upholding the law to Protect the citizens of his city. Anyone that opposes Arpaio knows that he will try everything he can to discredit them. That's his MO. He didn't show up because Dan Saban was there to confront him. And being the mental midget Arpaio is, he knows he would have looked like the idiot he is if confronted.

Good for you ATM. Morally I couldn't give a rats patooty. I am one of the most immoral people on this site and proud of it. I don't believe in "God" or the "Bible". I like my women bi-sexual and I go to strip clubs with my wife so I can watch her get lap dances from women. My reputation is what it is. People either agree with me or not. At least I don't delete their posts like you. My reputation has always been the same from day one. People know I'm not wishy washy. They know I shoot straight, like it or not. You are sounding like a little whiny girl. I suggest you use your own forum to spew your BS directed toward me and stop using other blogger's posts as your playground. They already told you what they think of your deleting posts and your cowardly way of not be able to handle adverse situations. Once again I implore you to grow a pair and stop crying like a little girl.

Rick,

Personally I think it is all ridiculous. Both of these guys are suppose to be crime fighters. Why can’t they both work together to fight crime and catch illegal aliens. Noticed I said ILLEGAL aliens, not legal aliens, immigrants, or people of Mexican descent. For some reason when someone talks about ILLEGAL immigration they always associate this with people of Mexican descent instead of “Illegal Aliens”. I don’t understand why

Anyway, back to the topic. Sheriff Joe should cooperate with the Mesa police in their efforts to enforce the laws. And that is exactly what Sheriff Joe is doing with his illegal alien roundups; he is enforcing the immigration law. These laws exists and both Arpaio and Gascon’ need to enforce them just like any other law they are sworn to uphold and enforce. Furthermore, Gascon’ needs to quit his complaining because maybe there is a reason that Arpaio is withholding information. And maybe Arpaio is withholding information because Gascon’ has stated he will NOT enforce illegal immigration laws, even though he is sworn to uphold the laws no matter if he agrees with them or not. So Gascon’, start enforcing the law, we don’t care if you don’t like it.

As for this being discriminatory towards people who “look” Hispanic, it’s all a bunch of bull. Where in Sheriff Joe’s “Anti-Immigration Sweeps” do you see anything about being Hispanic? He is not conducting “Anti-Hispanic Sweeps”. Everyone is complaining that they are being stopped and detained because they might be illegal, look illegal, or don’t have proper ID. However, let m

Looks like I over ran my posing limit. being new here I didn't know of this limit. Here is the rest.

Everyone is complaining that they are being stopped and detained because they might be illegal, look illegal, or don’t have proper ID. However, let me state that I am often stopped and checked out by police officers if I look like I might be a suspect in a crime or may have done something wrong. I have to carry an ID with me, and don’t think I wouldn’t get a ticket at minimum if stopped and I did not have my ID on me. So Sheriff Joe’s anti-immigration sweeps do nothing different than they would if Mesa PD stopped me, a white American. If they stopped me I would have to show ID and prove that I was not responsible for doing what they suspected I did. So everyone needs to stop whining about this. Yes it’s an inconvenience, but it benefits all of us, immigrants include.

Speaking of benefiting immigrants, the current laws are put in place to protect them as well as Americans. How come I never hear anyone talking about that part? Everyone just whines about how they are unfair to immigrants. However, if they follow the current rules/laws they don’t have to deal with human smugglers. They are not brought across the boarder 20 people unsafely packed into a small vehicle going 75+ mph down the highway and then crashing and ejecting people. They don’t have to cross the desert in the heat and face dehydration or sun stroke. They are not kept in small overcrowded drop houses with no cooling of heating where they might be tied up so they don’t run away and must share

Still too big??? Here is the final part...

They are not kept in small overcrowded drop houses with no cooling or heating where they might be tied up so they don’t run away and must share one bottle of water between 20+ people. What about these and other benefits? Why are they never spoken of?

We should all support Sheriff Joe. He is just doing his job, protecting us all (Hispanics included). As for Chief Gascon’, we need to all insist that he start doing his job and arrest people who break the law, illegal immigrants included.

I don't live in The Valley, or even close...but I would vote for Sheriff Joe over and over...and that is why he is still in office. He was voted in to office to do a job. He is not performing illegal round ups of "mexicans". He is performing his sworn duties and that includes busting people doing wrong by crossing "our" boarders illeagally....
My husband is a truck driver and we were once stopped for a "faulty" tail light, in turn got a ticket for not having his licencs on his person. Does that men we should sue the PD because he may hve been profiled as a drug running redneck truck driver.?????
Everyone needs to stop whining, stay in thier own "loving countries" if they dont like our laws and rules for living here...
Keep in mind, if you are an illeagal imagrant, you have no rights here... but their is nothing inhumane about you going back to your own country, going through the proper channels, fighting in our military services and paying your taxes to recieve our benifits (health aid, schooling, free lunches...ect.)
Once you have done that, I will welcome you as a friend.
Until them ....GO JOE
at least he is willing to put his head on the patter, follow through on his sworn duties to up hold the laws of this land, like it or not....!
